 Based on cooling system : 1. Air cooled engines and 2. Liquid cooled engines
 Based on applications : 1. Statinary engine 2. Rocket engine and 3. Automobile engine
 Based on construction : 1. Inline engines, 2. Opposed engines, 3. Rotary engine, 4. V-engines and 5. W engines
